What is virtualization?

Simply put, virtualization gives you the ability to run multiple servers/systems on a single physical machine. So, instead of running one system on one piece of hardware, you can install multiple servers and workstations on a single device, provided the machine has ample resource availability of CPU/RAM/Storage etc.

How does virtualization work?

Virtualized vs traditional Server
Virtualization is achieved by having an intermediate layer (the “hypervisor”) between the physical hardware (the “host”) and multiple operating systems (called guest operating systems, or Virtual Machines – VMs). The hypervisor allocates and shares resources, such as disk space, CPU, RAM, and network interfaces, among the VMs that are installed on it. Each of the VMs operate and exist as if they are independent servers on your network. The most commonly used hypervisors in the industry today are VMware, Microsoft, and Citrix. StepUP IT Services offers services for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization solutions.

Why Virtualize?

Virtualition statistics
The adoption of virtualization is very high, and it has been found that more than 76% of server workloads are running on virtualized infrastructure (Source – Gartner’s 2016 report on x86 server Virtualization worldwide).

There are many benefits of virtualization; the reasons for adopting it vary between organizations, based on size, specific needs, and applications.

One of the more commonly known benefits of running multiple servers on a single piece of physical hardware is cost savings, but there are many more reasons to virtualize your data center server environment. Each of the reasons can have a significant impact on your bottom line, productivity, market agility, and system resiliency.

Virtualization for Small to Medium Businesses (SMB)

The benefits of virtualization are so many that even small and medium-sized organizations, with a single server, can gain from implementation. Virtualization gives access to enterprise features that will increase uptime and provide the ability to run a second server on the same physical hardware that is already in place. It is very affordable to deploy virtualization solutions for SMBs, using versions for smaller environments—VMware has options, and Microsoft is now including Hyper-V Hypervisor at no cost with their Windows Server 2016 licenses. The savings multiplies as the number of servers and applications increase. Organizations with more than one server tend to see more direct savings on hardware, power, space, etc. StepUP IT can help you find out how virtualization can benefit your specific business.
